The History of the Vinyl report Player

Record players have been with us for many years; they are for many the music format of choice, gift a warmer, more wholesome sound than today's digital formats. But what is the history of this tantalizing technology?

The first report player was in fact invented by Thomas Edison way back in 1877. At the time he labelled it as a phonograph and in this instance music was not his first intended use for the device. The phonograph any way used cylinders rather than disc players control by tantalizing a stylus over grooves in a vinyl or cylinder. The shape and size of the grooves determines the sounds that are produced. The sound that comes from the stylus starts highly quietly and is then passed through a mechanical or electrical amplifier to furnish truly audible sounds.

During the Second World War the gramophone became favorite as vinyl records could be produced relatively cheaply. This started colse to fifty years of popularity for the report player, from the end of the war all the way through to the late seventies it was the music format of choice, particularly when advancements were made in the yield of high fidelity players that could faithfully reproduce music with only minor defects.

The report player affected the music business immensely. The need for live music dissipated as people now had a means of listening to music in their home without the need for a band or artist. The growth in popularity of records also enhanced radio programmes, which conversely affected the sales of report players negatively while the forties.

Up until the seventies there were no real challenges to the use of records as the customary way in which people listened to music. Eight tracks were the first major challenge although records managed to fight off the threat. any way in the eighties and the invention of cassette tapes the demise of the report player was written on the wall, the Cd player being the final nail in the coffin in the late eighties early nineties.

Despite the growth in popularity of other mediums the report has maintained a place in the hearts of many music fans, arguing that it provides a richer and more fulfilling sound.
